For me, garden design comes down to two key elements: awareness of place and knowledge of plants. A garden must complement the built and natural environment, tying into the owner’s broader aesthetic, and the plants must be able to thrive in the local conditions. Within these parameters, there is much potential for exciting juxtapositions and intricate tapestries that shift throughout the seasons. Plants are the ultimate style chameleons, lending themselves to schemes ranging from cottage to contemporary, and creating unique living tableaux is the ultimate pleasure of garden design.
